History of CD ROM : CD ROM Full Form
The earlier form of storage devices were floppies, however, floppies had limited capacity and a very short life span. Hence work was started to reach on a standard solution that would offer better storage space and a longer life span. The work-related initial phase of CD was started long back in the year 1958-1959. Pioneers for the same were David Paul Gregg (1958) and James Russel (1965–1975). Gregg even registered patents for the same and his patents were eventually used in the development of the Laser Disc. To understand the CD-ROM full form we must learn its history.
MCA and Philips purchased Gregg patents and a laser disk was developed. We would like to mention here that the laser disk is exactly the predecessor of the compact disk. In laser disk information is stored through the analog method whereas in compact disk data is stored through the digital process.
The first compact Disc Digital Audio (CD-DA) was designed in collaboration between Sony and Philips in 1980, initially, the compact Disc was designed to hold voice and music only. Later on, it was modified to hold data as well. The initial capacity of CD ROM was 553 MB.
Material and Design of CD ROM
CD ROMs are available in several sizes but standard (or rather commercially most commonly produced) CD ROM has a diameter of 120 mm. There are CD ROM with 80 mm diameter are also available in the market. CD ROM has a thickness of 1.2 mm. It is made of polycarbonate plastic, with a thin reflective layer of Aluminium. If we look at the microscopic view of CD ROM, it has a structure of Bits and lands, and data is read through laser light.
CD ROM is often called a pre-pressed compact disc. Pre-pressing is nothing but the process of assembling and editing a product (such as a book or newspaper) prior to printing. Here materials on CD ROMs are finalized and then it is mass-produced, that’s why CD ROMs are often called pre-pressed compact discs.
Data Organization in CR-ROM
The data on a CD-ROM is organized in various sectors and tracks. Each sector can hold 2,352 bytes of data, which includes both user data and error correction codes. Multiple sectors make up a block, and multiple blocks form a cluster. The data is arranged in a way that allows efficient reading and error correction in real time.
CD-ROM File Systems
CD-ROMs use various file systems to organize & access data. Out of all these file systems, the most common file systems used are (1). ISO 9660 (also known as CDFS – Compact Disc File System) and (2) its extensions like Joliet and Rock Ridge. These file systems enable cross-platform compatibility, which is what is allowing CD-ROMs to be read on different operating systems, such as Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Data Transfer Rate
The data transfer rate of a standard CD-ROM drive is measured in kilobytes (KB) per second (KB/s) or megabytes per second (MB/s). In the beginning, the early CD-ROM drives had slower transfer rates, typically around 150 KB/s, whereas with the technological improvements, later models have reached speeds of up to 52x, allowing for faster data transfer.
Multi-session CDs
CD-ROMs have the capabilities and can be created with multiple sessions. This helps new data to be added to an existing disc without overwriting the previous content. The Multi-session feature of CD ROM has helped in using CD ROMs for incremental backups.
Hybrid CD-ROMs
Hybrid CDs combined data in different formats on the same disc. An example of it is a hybrid CD that could contain both data accessible on a computer and audio tracks playable in a standard audio CD player. This feature made CD Roms even more versatile.
Legacy Support in CD-ROMs
Though the technology has advanced, despite declining usage, many older computers, gaming consoles, and audio systems still support CD-ROMs. Hence making CD-ROMs valuable for accessing and preserving legacy content.
