Brdoli was a small town located in the Gujrat state of India. It is situated in Surat district and approximately 40 km away from Surat.

In 1928, the British government imposed a huge 30% increase in land revenue for the farmers of Bardoli. By that time Bardoli was already facing the impact of floods and hence the loos in crop production. The poor peasants (or farmers) were never in a position to pay the increased taxes and were sure about the threat of losing their only source of earning which is land.

Hence on on 12 June 1928, local farmers refused to pay taxes. Gujrati activists Narhari Parikh, Ravi Shankar Vyas, and Mohanlal Pandya were instrumental in bringing the farmers together.
