He has become a household name overnight after he has been declared as the next prime minister of the United Kingdom on 24th Oct 2022. After being elected British Prime Minister Liz Truss resigned on 20th Oct 2022, after just 45 days as the British Prime Minister, his name along with Penny Mordaunt emerged as the party leader of the conservative party and hence the British Prime Minister.
However, after failing to secure a minimum of 100 nominations from the conservative party MPs, Penny Mordaunt withdrew leaving the path for him, to become the next prime minister on 24th Oct 2022.

After leaving this in 2009, he joined another hedge fund management company Theleme Partners. He continued to work there till 2013. In 2013 he became the director of Catamaran Ventures. One thing to be noted here is that Catamaran Ventures’ owner is Mr N. R. Narayana Murthy, the founder of Infosys and his future father-in-law.
Political Career
His Political career started way back in 2000 when he was completing his graduation. He undertook his internship at Conservative Campaign Headquarters. This has been considered a major change and a liking for political aspiration.
His first major breakthrough was when he was selected as the Conservative candidate for Richmond (Yorks) in October 2014. This cleared his path to becoming the MP, as the seat is considered a safe haven for a conservative party. The Conservative Party didn’t lose this seat in the last 100 years.
In 2015 he has been elected MP from his constituency and served as a member of was a member of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee. In the general election of 2017, he has been re-elected this time even with better margins. This time he served as parliamentary under-secretary from January 2018 to July 2019.
Later on in July 2019, he was appointed as the chief secretary to the Treasury by then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
He was again re-elected with even better votes from his constituency and has been appointed as Chancellor of the Exchequer.
He was later promoted to full-fledged Chancellor and delivered his first budget in the coming months.
After resigning from his post On 5 July 2022, He fought in the Conservative party leadership election to replace Johnson. He and then Foreign Secretary Liz Truss emerged as the leading members to replace Johnson, the race which Liz Truss ultimately won.
After just 45 days as the prime minister, Liz Truss resigned. Rishi Sunak, Penny Mordaunt and Boris Johnson (Former Prime minister) were involved in a three-horse race to become the conservative party leadership. In the later stages, Boris Johnson ruled himself out and Penny Mordaunt failed to secure the minimum threshold of 100 markers, he has emerged as the winner and hence the next prime minister of the United Kingdom.
